Side sleeper testing a contour pillow with a built-in ear space and adjustable height at the JC Health showroom, Waterloo Street Singapore

Side Sleeper With Ear Pain? Why a Pillow With an Ear Space Helps

Quick answer: If you sleep on your side and wake up with a sore, folded ear or a stiff neck, your pillow may be pressing on your ear and sitting at the wrong height. A contour pillow with a built-in ear space lets your ear rest in a small hollow instead of being squashed, while the right height keeps your neck level. The best way to know is to lie down on it, on your usual side, for at least a minute.

"Where is the ear hole?"

Last week a lady lay down on the floor mat in our showroom to test one of our pillows. She turned onto her side, moved her head a little, and asked me, "Eh, where is the ear hole?" I showed her. She moved slightly, let her ear drop into the space, and then she laughed: "Oh, that's why it feels nicer."

It is a small moment, but I see it again and again. Many side sleepers have lived for years with an ear that is folded under their head all night. They blame their neck, their shoulder, even their mattress. Very few people think about the ear.

Why side sleeping presses on the ear

When you lie on your side, the point where your head meets the pillow is almost exactly where your ear is. On a normal flat pillow, the ear is pressed and folded between your head and the pillow for hours. Many people then push an arm under the pillow to lift the pressure, and wake up with a numb arm or a tight shoulder instead.

What an ear space does

Our butterfly contour pillows have side depressions, what we simply call the ear space. Your head and neck are supported at the right height, while your ear rests inside the hollow instead of being crushed. Most people do not notice it at first. They only notice that they stop turning over so often.

Tip: if you tend to shift during the night, place your ear directly inside the side depression when you first lie down.

Height matters as much as shape

For side sleepers, the pillow has to fill the gap between the shoulder and the head so the neck stays level. Broad shoulders need a higher pillow, and slimmer frames need a lower one. This is why our JC Health 17cm Butterfly Pillow has a 3-layer system:

  • 11 cm (base core only): narrow shoulders, stomach sleepers and kids.
  • 14 cm (core + 1 layer): average frame, back and combination sleepers.
  • 17 cm (all 3 layers): broad or large-frame side sleepers.

It comes with two washable Tencel cotton cases. If you prefer a fixed height, our Contour Memory Foam Pillow has a two-way design: 12 cm for side sleepers and 9 cm for back sleepers.

How to test a pillow properly

  • Lie down on your usual side for at least one minute, not just a few seconds.
  • Ask someone to check that your neck is level, not bent up or down.
  • Turn onto your back and see if the centre still feels right.
  • Bring your partner: many couples need different heights, and that is completely normal.

At our showroom we keep pillows on a floor mat so you can test real sleeping positions, not just press the pillow with your hand in a shop.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my ear hurt when I sleep on my side?
On a regular pillow the ear is pressed and folded under your head for hours. A pillow with an ear space gives it room.

What pillow height is right for a side sleeper?
It depends on your shoulder width. Broad shoulders often need about 17 cm, average frames about 14 cm, and slim frames about 11 cm.

Can I adjust the height later?
Yes. With the 3-layer butterfly pillow you add or remove layers at home.

Is the pillowcase washable?
Yes, the Tencel cotton cases are machine washable.

Can I try before buying?
Yes. Come and lie down on our showroom mat at Waterloo Street.
