Thick or Thin Donut Cushion? How to Choose the Right Size, Hole and Height

Quick answer: There is no single "best" donut cushion. The right one matches three things: your body frame, the chair you actually sit on, and how many hours you sit each day. A cushion that is too soft sinks until your tailbone touches the chair again; one that is too thick lifts you so high that your feet and lower back lose support. The simplest way to choose is to sit on it, on a chair like yours at home, for a few minutes before you buy.

"Thick one or thin one?"

If I had one dollar for every time someone asked me this at our Waterloo Street showroom, I could probably buy a new chair for every customer. Very often the person asking is not buying for themselves. It is a daughter preparing for her mother's operation, a husband whose wife has tailbone pain after a fall, or a young man who sits in a gaming chair twelve hours a day.

They have usually looked online first. The pictures all look the same, the reviews all sound the same, and the only real difference seems to be the price and the thickness. So they come in and ask me to just tell them which one is best.

My honest answer always disappoints a little at first: it depends on you. Then we sit down together, and within ten minutes the answer becomes very clear. Here is exactly how we do it.

1. Thickness: more is not always better

Most people assume the thickest, softest cushion must be the most comfortable. In real life, a cushion that is too soft collapses under body weight, and the area you wanted to protect ends up pressing on the chair anyway. A cushion that is too high can lift you until your feet no longer rest flat, and your lower back loses the chair's support.

  • Taller or heavier frame: usually needs a larger, firmer high-density foam cushion that will not bottom out.
  • Smaller or lighter frame: a compact cushion often feels more stable and keeps the feet on the floor.
  • Soft sofa or car seat: choose a firmer cushion, because the seat underneath is already soft.
  • Hard wooden dining chair: this is where a good donut cushion makes the biggest difference, and it is the chair most Singapore families sit on every day.

2. The hole: what it is really for

The opening in a donut cushion is there to reduce direct pressure on the tailbone and the sensitive area underneath. When you test one, do not just sit perfectly straight for two seconds. Sit the way you normally sit: lean back, reach for the table, turn to talk. The opening should still be in the right place.

3. Size: match the cushion to the chair

Measure the seat you will actually use most: office chair, dining chair, car seat, gaming chair or wheelchair. A cushion that hangs over the edge or slides around will not give steady support. In our showroom we keep two sizes side by side so you can feel the difference:

Both have removable, machine-washable covers with a zip, which matters more than people think during a long recovery.

4. One cushion or a set?

If your lower back also gets tired, a seat cushion alone is not enough. Our 2-in-1 Lumbar Support & Donut Seat Cushion Set supports both the back and the seat. The two pieces zip apart, so you can use them together on one chair, or split them between two chairs, for example the seat cushion on the office chair and the lumbar support in the car.

5. Preparing for surgery? Buy before the operation date

The families who come in before the operation always tell me the same thing afterwards: it took one worry away. You can test the setup calmly, learn how to remove and wash the cover, and have everything ready at home before the patient returns. You can read a real example in Why Online Pictures Aren't Enough for Surgery Recovery.

How we help you choose in 10 minutes

  1. You sit on the thin and the thick cushion, on a wooden dining chair and on an office chair.
  2. We check that your feet are flat and your back still touches the backrest.
  3. You lean, turn and stand up, the way you do at home.
  4. If your back also needs help, you try the lumbar set.

No pressure to buy. Many people simply leave knowing exactly what they need.

Frequently asked questions

Is a thicker donut cushion better after hemorrhoid surgery?
Not always. It must be firm enough not to sink, and not so high that your feet leave the floor. Doctors often suggest a donut (ring) cushion after this type of surgery; the right thickness depends on your body and chair.

40 cm or 45 cm: which size should I choose?
Measure your chair seat. The 45 cm suits larger chairs and bigger frames; the 40 cm is compact and easy to carry.

Can I wash the cover?
Yes. Both donut cushions have zip-off covers that are machine washable.

Can I use the cushion in the car?
Yes. Many customers keep the compact 40 cm cushion or the lumbar support in the car.

Can I try before buying?
Yes, that is why we have a showroom. Come and sit on them on real chairs.
