Quick answer: After knee surgery, the goal at home is not to build big muscles fast. It is gentle, steady movement every day: it keeps the joint moving, the blood flowing and the muscles from wasting, while the body heals. A seated mini bike or a motorised seated elliptical can both help. The best one is the one your parent will actually use every day.
It was one of those days. Outside our unit, boxes everywhere, and I had just been told again that I can't keep so many things in the corridor. Running a product business in a small space means moving cartons is part of my job. Inside, chairs were all over the place and a new shelf had just arrived. I was about to rearrange the whole showroom when a family stopped at our door: an elderly mother, her husband, and their daughter.
"Do we need an appointment?" the daughter asked. We do have a booking link now, but I wasn't going to turn them away. Even with the floor half-arranged, I invited them in.
"We are looking for a mini bike," she said. "For my mother's knee rehab."
The bandage on her knee
I sat her mother down, adjusted the distance for her feet and put the straps on the mini bike. She started pedalling. That's when I saw the white bandage around her knee. Her daughter explained: Mum had an operation, and now her knee needs rehab.
As a coach, one thing came to my mind straight away. When one knee hurts, the body quietly protects it by letting the other leg do more of the work. On a manual bike, a weak knee can lean on the strong one to push through. So I said, "We also have an electric seated elliptical. There's no balance issue with it. Would she like to try?"

I found an extension cord, put the elliptical in front of the sofa and switched it on. Her father sat down on the sofa and tried it too. Watching him there, I thought: the sofa and the elliptical together really are a good combination.
"I want her to grow muscle fast"
Her daughter told me what she hoped for. She wanted her mum to build muscle, quickly.
I understand that wish so well. When you love someone, you want them back on their feet tomorrow. But I told her honestly what I believe: growing muscle takes a long time. Right now, for her mum, the goal is different. Keep the muscles from fading. Keep the joint moving at a gentle angle. Let the tissue and fascia around the knee recover. Keep the nerves and the movement pattern alive. That is what brings back strength and balance, step by step.
"Both machines have their good points," I said. "The elliptical is gentle and the motor helps when she feels tired. The mini bike can also be used on a table for the hands and shoulders. The most important thing is the one she can do every day. Don't do it once and stop because it's tiring or it hurts. Then it's wasted."
In the end the daughter felt the power cord would be a bit of trouble at home, and chose the mini bike, because it can train both legs and arms. "It's your decision," I told her. "I just want to show you the options."
Why I open every box before it leaves
While I made the order, I took out a brand-new mini bike, opened the box and tested the resistance knob in front of them. In one batch, I found a few knobs that didn't adjust the way they should. Since then, I check every mini bike myself, in the showroom and before it ships out. That is my principle. The knob worked well. A new one feels a little loose at first and slowly gets firmer with use.
No elderly parent should struggle at home with a machine that doesn't work right. If something needs checking, I would rather do it here, with my own hands.

"According to your butt"
Meanwhile, the daughter had found our cushion wall. "So many cushions. Which one is good?"
"It depends on each person," I said. Her father, from the sofa, said: "According to your butt!" We all laughed. But he was right. Different bodies feel different on the same cushion.
So everyone sat. The daughter tried our 45 cm donut cushion: "So good, so supportive." Then the blue 40 cm one, and for her that was even better: it curves around you, doesn't move, and supports the tailbone. Her mother sat on our 2-in-1 lumbar set and said it was so comfortable with the back support. And her father, on the sofa with the backrest from the set behind him, nodded: good support.
Then the daughter thought of home. "Maybe I should buy for my two sons. They play games and sit for so long. Their posture is so bad." Her father agreed from the sofa: they really do sit all the time.
That reminded me of another mother who bought a cushion for her son who games a lot. A week later I asked her how it went. She said her son hardly talks to her, and if she buys him something he doesn't like, he simply gives it back to her. This time, a whole week passed, and he never gave the cushion back. From a teenage son, that is a five-star review.
She smiled, thought about it, and took a cushion home for her boys.
Looking around at all three of them, each testing something different at the same time, the daughter laughed: "Your place should be bigger!" I thanked her from the bottom of my heart. When a customer wishes you a bigger shop, it means she really cares, and she sees the care inside the small one. It is my wish too. On busy days, when more families come at once, it is hard to look after everyone the way I want to. One day, I hope, we will have the space.
A small question that stayed with me
Before paying, she asked if she could use CDC vouchers. Not yet, I said. We applied about a year ago and are still waiting. She told me she had just used her vouchers at a flower shop, and asked why products like ours, so suitable for families and the community, can't be bought with them. She is right. Many elderly have vouchers they never use up, and some rarely go downstairs. Something for exercising at home would help them so much. It reminded me: we need to keep trying, so more families can benefit.
Even a flower shop can take CDC vouchers. Our showroom is for families, especially the elderly: they come, try, and take home something to stay strong and independent in their own home. I hope one day the people who decide will notice small places like ours, so vouchers can be used for health at home too.
A small gift for her strength
Before they left, I gave her mother a small gift: a light 4 kg water kettlebell. You carry it home empty, fill it with water, and it won't scratch the floor. Along with it, a simple care guide. My wish for her is simple: every day, 30 minutes, hands and legs together.
When they walked out, I watched her mother take each step very carefully. Yes, that knee still hurts. I thanked the three of them for coming, and said again: if anything is ever wrong with the product, just come back here.
Why we keep doing it this way
Days like this remind me why JC Health exists. It would be easier to sell sealed boxes online and never meet anyone. But older parents and people recovering from surgery don't need fancy machines. They need honest advice, equipment someone has checked with their own hands, and a place where the whole family can sit down and try before they decide. It is not always easy to keep going, but this is what I will keep insisting on, for as long as we are here.
To the mother, her husband and her daughter: we wish Mum a steady recovery, stronger legs every week, and many good days ahead with the family.
What helps after knee surgery, simply
- Gentle and every day beats hard and once in a while: a little movement daily keeps the joint moving and the muscles from wasting while the body heals.
- Watch for the "strong leg doing all the work": a sore knee makes the other leg compensate. A motorised seated elliptical moves both legs evenly. On a manual mini bike, start with light resistance.
- Muscle takes time: building real strength takes many weeks of steady effort. Keeping what you have is the first win.
- Use the arms too: a mini bike on the table keeps the shoulders and arms moving.
- Make it a habit: link it to the TV. One 30-minute session per episode is easy to remember.

Frequently asked questions
Is a mini bike good for knee rehab at home? It can be a gentle way to keep the knee moving every day while seated. Start with light resistance and short sessions, and build up slowly.
Mini bike or electric seated elliptical: which is better after knee surgery? Both help. The electric elliptical moves both legs evenly with a motor, so a weaker leg can't hide behind a stronger one, and it's easy on tired days. The mini bike needs no power and can also train the arms on a table. Choose the one your parent will use daily.
How long should my parent pedal each day? Many people aim for about 30 minutes a day, split up if needed. Our seated elliptical's auto programmes stop by themselves after 30 minutes.
How fast can muscle come back after surgery? Slowly. Real strength takes many weeks of steady effort. In the beginning, the goal is to keep moving and stop the muscles fading.
Which seat cushion is right for me? It depends on your body and your chair. That's why we let everyone sit on each one. As one dad said: "According to your butt."
Can I try before buying in Singapore? Yes. Our showroom is at 261 Waterloo Street #02-02, Waterloo Centre (Lift A to Level 2), near Bugis. Book a visit or WhatsApp 8812 2622.
