Quick answer: Hard church pews and wooden café chairs press straight on the tailbone, and seniors have less natural padding there. A cushion with firm foam, a tailbone cut-out that matches your frame, and lower-back support helps most. The only reliable way to know the fit is to sit on it, on a chair like the one you use. In this story, a petite lady in her 80s chose our 2-in-1 Lumbar & Seat Cushion Set after testing three cushions.
At 11:30am on a quiet Wednesday, I looked through the glass door of our Waterloo Street showroom and saw a small group arriving for their appointment.
There were four of them: two ladies in their 80s with silver hair, and two younger church friends in their late 30s. One lady walked with a travel cane. The other was petite and slender, and walked with a noticeable stoop.
As I opened the door, she looked up after climbing the stairs with her cane and asked gently, "No lift here?"
My heart sank. I felt so sorry. What many first-time visitors don't know is that Waterloo Centre has a cargo lift just four units to the left of our shop, and it is also for passengers. I apologised right away for not making that clear before her visit.
Climbing stairs with weak knees takes a huge effort. Yet there she was, because she was determined to find a real answer to her daily sitting pain.
"I have so many cushions at home"
I invited her to sit down and rest. She told me long sitting had become painful, especially on hard seats.
"I have so many cushions at home," she said, "but they are all flat or soft. They don't support anything."
She was right. A normal household cushion feels soft for the first few minutes, but it gives no structure. As we age, we lose some muscle around the hips and seat. On a hard surface, more of the upper body's weight ends up pressing on the tailbone (coccyx).
A good ergonomic cushion works differently. High-density foam with a shaped cut-out moves pressure away from the tailbone and spreads your weight across the hips and thighs.
She nodded. That was exactly why she came. She didn't want another online picture with big promises. She wanted to feel the difference with her own body before buying.
A quiet display of inner strength
We started with our 2-in-1 Lumbar & Seat Cushion Set on the wooden dining chair in our showroom, very similar to church and home seating.

Testing on a wooden chair, just like a church pew.
After a few moments, she wanted to try the seat cushion on its own. As she went to stand up, I saw how much she struggled.
Standing up from a chair is one of the key everyday movements we look at in functional ageing. It needs leg strength, core stability and healthy knees. She held tightly onto her cane and the edge of the table, pushing against her weak knees.
I offered to bring over a quad cane (a 4-point cane that stands on its own) from our shelf for better leverage. She softly declined, pushed through, and stood up on her own.
In that moment I felt deep respect for her. Behind that small frame was a woman with real mental strength, who treasures her independence.
Testing every option: finding the right fit
There is no one-size-fits-all cushion. Body shape, tailbone sensitivity and sitting style are different for everyone. So she tried all three:
- Blue 40cm cushion: Her friends moved the back cushion away so she could try it. She liked the curved front that stops you sliding forward. But because her frame is small, the rear cut-out felt too wide to support her tailbone.
- Grey 45cm donut cushion: Again, her tailbone felt like it was floating over the hole, without enough contact at the back.
- 2-in-1 Lumbar & Seat Cushion Set: When she sat on the seat from this set, her face lit up. Its cut-out sits a little further forward, so it cradles a smaller frame.

Her church friends helped her try each cushion, one by one.
Then we attached the lumbar piece and moved it slightly upward to fit the curve of her back. She smiled: "Wow, this lumbar back support feels amazing!"
That small adjustment made the difference. Her lower back was supported and her tailbone was off the pressure point, so she could sit upright without straining.
From church pews to café chairs
She decided to take the full set home. As I unpacked a fresh set to check the zips and quality with her, she shared her plan for the day.
She had organised this outing with her church friends just to solve her seating problem. After our showroom, they were going to Crossings Café at the Catholic Centre, in the next building, for lunch together.
"I'm bringing this cushion to church," she told me.
Church pews and café chairs are made of hard wood, built to last and easy to clean, not for long sitting. For a young person, an hour on a pew is fine. For a senior with less natural padding, that one hour can mean pain that lingers for the rest of the day.
So her new cushion went straight to lunch, and from now on to every Sunday service.

Our seniors are wise
Watching her and her friends walk to the lift after their visit, I felt very fulfilled.
Our seniors don't fall for flash sales or big online claims. They want real solutions, honest advice, and a safe place to test before they buy.
She made a big physical effort to come to us, test her options and choose carefully. Serving thoughtful seniors like her is the reason I keep going with JC Health every day.
To her and her lovely church friends: thank you for trusting JC Health. May every church service, café lunch and quiet moment at home be a comfortable one.
Choosing a cushion for church, cafés or hard chairs: a quick checklist
- Test on a hard wooden chair, the kind you will really sit on.
- Check where your tailbone sits. A small frame may need a cut-out placed further forward.
- Add lower-back support if you sit upright for an hour or more.
- Check the weight and size if you will carry it to church or on outings.
- Choose a washable, zip-off cover.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best seat cushion for elderly people sitting on church pews?
A firm, high-density foam cushion with a tailbone cut-out that matches the person's frame, ideally with lower-back support. Soft or flat cushions sink and give little support. Petite seniors often need a cut-out placed further forward, like the seat in our 2-in-1 Lumbar & Seat Cushion Set.
Why do hard chairs hurt the tailbone more as we get older?
With age we lose some muscle and padding around the hips and seat, so on a hard wooden chair more of the body's weight presses on the tailbone. A shaped cushion moves that pressure to the hips and thighs.
Is the 2-in-1 cushion set easy to bring to church?
Yes. The seat and lumbar pieces zip apart, so you can carry just the seat cushion, or both. Each has a washable zip-off cover.
Is there a lift to the JC Health showroom?
Yes. At Waterloo Centre, the cargo lift on the left side, about 4 units from our shop #02-02, is also for passengers. Seniors with a cane or walker do not need to climb the stairs.
Can I try the cushions before buying?
Yes. That is why we have a showroom at 261 Waterloo Street, #02-02. You can test all three cushions on a wooden chair, an office chair and a recliner. Saturday open house 11am to 5pm; weekdays by appointment, 9am to 6pm (WhatsApp 8812 2622).
